EOAN honors climbers who fixed ropes on Everest and Lhotse.
Tourism Minister Badri Prasad Pandey and other top officials honored a team of Sherpa climbers today for successfully fixing ropes to the summits of Mount Everest and Lhotse during this year’s spring climbing season. The event, organized by the Expedition Operators Association Nepal (EOAN), was held in Kathmandu to recognize their vital work in preparing safe routes for climbers.
The rope-fixing task was handled by 8K Expeditions Pvt Ltd, under EOAN’s coordination. The team, led by Ashok Lama and IFMGA-certified guide Tsering Pemba Sherpa, fixed ropes to the Everest summit on May 9. Team members included Pem Nurbu Sherpa, Tashi Sherpa, Karma Gyaljen Sherpa, Tashi Gyalzen Sherpa, and Pas Tenzi Sherpa. The same team, with added support from other experienced Sherpas, completed the Lhotse rope-fixing on May 8.
Lakpa Sherpa, co-owner of 8K Expeditions and director of the operation from base camp, said the team worked hard despite many challenges. “Our rope-fixing team gave it their all this season and finished the job on time, even setting double ropes,” he said.
Several accomplished climbers were also honored at the event, including Tashi Gyalzen Sherpa, who summited Everest four times in 14 days; Dawa Tenzi Sherpa, a three-time triple crown holder; and Lakpa Sherpa himself.
Minister Pandey praised the Sherpas for their contributions to global mountaineering and pledged government support for promoting Nepal’s mountaineering tourism. He also honored Nepali climbers who recently summited Cho Oyu from the Nepal side on June 7.
EOAN President Damber Parajuli called for a standardized rope-fixing system on all peaks and urged the government to create a dedicated fund for waste management in high-altitude areas. EOAN General Secretary Rishi Ram Bhandari also stressed the need for a climbers’ welfare fund and asked the government to act quickly to support the mountaineering sector.
