Inter Milan moves on in Club World Cup after 2-0 win over River Plate
The momentum shifted after River Plate’s Lucas Martínez Quarta was shown a red card in the 66th minute for tripping Henrikh Mkhitaryan during a promising breakaway. Just before that, River Plate nearly scored when Manuel Lanzini delivered a cross to Facundo Colidio, but Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer made a crucial save.
Esposito, a 19-year-old striker, scored his first goal for Inter just days after assisting in their 2-1 win over Urawa Red Diamonds. Bastoni added the second goal in front of over 45,000 fans, firing a left-footed shot from outside the box in the 93rd minute.
With this win, Inter Milan topped Group E with 7 points, ahead of Monterrey, who also advanced after a 4-0 win against Urawa. River Plate ended with 4 points, while Urawa lost all three of their matches.
