International Yoga Day celebrated across the country with various events

Kathmandu, June 21 – Nepal is celebrating International Yoga Day today with events taking place across the country. The day is observed every year on June 21, following a 2014 United Nations declaration. The idea for Yoga Day was proposed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and quickly gained support from 177 countries within just 90 days. At the time, Nepali Prime Minister Sushil Koirala was the first to endorse the proposal, followed by the European Union and other UN member states.

Although International Yoga Day has been officially recognized worldwide since 2015, Nepal had already been marking the day informally since 1979 on Magh 1 (around mid-January). Later, the government formally declared Magh 1 as National Yoga Day through the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction.

Yoga, which has its roots in the ancient Vedic traditions of the Himalayas, had declined in popularity in Nepal for some time. However, recent efforts and celebrations have helped spark renewed interest and participation in yoga across the country.
