Iranian Missiles Hit Hospital, Injuring Over 200; Israel Threatens Iran’s Supreme Leader
Beersheba, June 19 – Israel’s defense minister has threatened Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei after Iranian missiles hit a hospital in southern Israel and damaged buildings near Tel Aviv, injuring at least 240 people. In response, Israel struck an Iranian nuclear facility.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz directly blamed Khamenei and said the military has been told that Khamenei “should not be allowed to continue living.” Earlier this week, U.S. officials said former President Donald Trump had blocked an Israeli plan to assassinate Khamenei, though Trump later claimed there were no such plans “for now.”
The hospital strike in the city of Beersheba injured dozens, but most wounds were minor. The hospital building hit had already been evacuated. After the attack, it limited services to only life-threatening cases. Many Israeli hospitals have been operating emergency plans, including moving patients to underground wards.
The Israeli military says the missile Iran used had multiple warheads, making it harder to intercept. A missile like that can overwhelm defense systems such as Israel’s Iron Dome.
Meanwhile, Israel attacked Iran’s Arak heavy water reactor—a site connected to its nuclear program—trying to prevent it from being used to make weapons-grade plutonium. Iran said the reactor was empty and posed no radiation danger.
Since the conflict began last Friday with Israeli airstrikes on Iranian military sites and scientists, at least 639 people in Iran have reportedly been killed—263 of them civilians. Iran has responded by firing hundreds of missiles and drones, killing at least 24 Israelis and injuring many more.
According to Israeli officials, their forces have destroyed about two-thirds of Iran’s missile launchers, though Iran is still capable of launching attacks.
Israel also recently bombed Iran’s Natanz enrichment site and other nuclear facilities, as well as targeting senior generals and nuclear experts.
While Israel believes Iran is getting closer to making nuclear weapons, Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful, though it is enriching uranium close to weapons-grade levels. Iran is the only country without nuclear weapons that does this.
Iran’s Supreme Leader rejected calls to surrender and warned the U.S. that if it intervenes, it would suffer severe consequences. Meanwhile, Iran’s foreign minister is heading to Geneva to meet with European leaders, possibly indicating a new push for diplomacy.
The United Nations’ nuclear agency has warned Israel against bombing nuclear sites. However, due to limited access, the agency says it can no longer fully monitor Iran’s nuclear material and activities.
