Melamchi water to be supplied to Kathmandu even during the monsoon
Ambathan (Sindhupalchowk), June 17
Water Supply Minister Pradip Yadav has assured that Melamchi drinking water will continue to reach Kathmandu even during this year’s monsoon.
During a visit to a newly constructed water tank near the Ribarma River in Sindhupalchowk on Monday, Minister Yadav said the tank had been successfully tested and will help ensure uninterrupted water supply through the Melamchi Drinking Water Project.
“This tank has been built as a backup system so that people in Kathmandu won’t face water shortages during the rainy season,” he said, noting that floods in the Melamchi River in the past had damaged infrastructure and disrupted supply.
Yadav added that the government is working to ensure long-term, reliable access to drinking water in the Kathmandu Valley.
Ratna Prasad Lamichhane, Executive Director of the Melamchi Drinking Water Development Committee, said the system can supply 50 to 70 million litres of water daily to Kathmandu from Ribarma via the Melamchi tunnel. He said all necessary infrastructure is now in place.
Water from the Ribarma River will be channeled through the new tank into the Melamchi tunnel, ensuring regular supply to the capital, he explained. The tunnel and distribution system have also been maintained to prevent any future disruptions.
The Melamchi flood four years ago severely damaged both local communities and critical infrastructure, including the water supply project. Since then, Kathmandu has faced recurring water shortages.
