Minister Bhandari says creating jobs is a top priority for Nepal’s development.

KATHMANDU, JUNE 9 — Speaking at the 113th International Labour Conference in Geneva, Labour Minister Sharat Singh Bhandari said that Nepal is focusing on job creation as a key part of its development plan. He announced that Nepal has declared this the Decade of Internal Employment Promotion to boost investment in sectors that create lots of jobs, mainly through partnerships between the government, private sector, and international partners.

To support this, Nepal has revamped its National Academy of Vocational Training, turning it into a leading center for developing modern skills. The Academy now focuses on digital, green, and entrepreneurial skills, and works closely with private companies, civil groups, and development organizations. The goal is to prepare Nepali workers for both local and international job opportunities, ensuring fair and safe working conditions.

Minister Bhandari also mentioned that Nepal is working on a broad plan to formalize jobs and improve social protection. This includes building platforms that connect job seekers with employers, register businesses, handle workplace disputes, and more — all linked to Nepal’s Social Security Fund.

He said that the country’s social security program now covers a wide range of benefits, like medical care, maternity leave, workplace injuries, disability, and pensions. The coverage is also being expanded to include informal workers and Nepalis returning from abroad.

Finally, he emphasized the importance of involving the government, employers, and workers in decision-making. This "tripartite" model of cooperation is also being implemented at the provincial and local levels to support Nepal’s federal system.
