Minister Paudel commits to operationalising basic hospitals from July 17

Kathmandu, June 23 — Minister for Health and Population, Pradip Paudel, has confirmed that the government is set to begin operating basic hospitals across the country from the start of the new fiscal year, beginning July 17. Speaking during a parliamentary discussion on the Appropriation Bill 2082, Minister Paudel said around 700 hospitals will start functioning under the recently approved Basic Hospital Operation Standards 2081, with a budget of Rs 1 billion allocated for the plan.

To address the shortage of medical staff, the ministry is preparing to recruit 2,500 health workers each year, aiming to hire 12,000 personnel over the next five years using the upcoming year’s budget.

The Minister also shared that an Organization and Management (O&M) survey of the health sector is underway to improve efficiency. The budget for the health insurance program has also been increased to make it more effective and better organized.

In terms of social welfare, Rs 100 million has been set aside to provide free burn treatment for people from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Minister Paudel assured that no one should die from burn injuries due to a lack of money for treatment.

He also revealed that the government is preparing to offer free treatment for childhood diabetes in all provinces.
