Nepal Rastra Bank gives final approval for IME Pay and Khalti merger
Kathmandu, June 19
Nepal Rastra Bank has officially approved the merger of two major digital wallets—IME Pay and Khalti. This is the first merger of its kind in Nepal’s digital payment sector.
The new combined company will be called IME Khalti Limited and will be based in Panipokhari, Kathmandu. However, the mobile app will continue to use the Khalti brand name.
With over five million verified users and the highest paid-up capital among digital wallets in Nepal, Khalti is set to become the country’s largest and most powerful digital wallet, according to the company.
The merger aims to expand digital payment services to rural areas and improve the overall fintech system in Nepal. The company says the joint platform will offer users a more smooth and easy financial experience.
Both the IME Pay and Khalti apps will keep running for the next three months while the companies merge their users, balances, and reward points. With just one click, users from both platforms will be integrated. IME Pay users will be moved to Khalti, but only with their permission. New users can directly download the Khalti app to use the new combined services.
Even though the app will be called Khalti, it will include features from both platforms. Users will be able to transfer their IME Pay balance and reward points to Khalti during this transition period.
The company believes this merger will help make Khalti not just more user-friendly, but also the most trusted digital payment platform in Nepal. It plans to expand services such as remittance, virtual banking, Visa cards, and credit access through the Khalti app.
They are confident that support from the central bank, partners, and users will continue as they begin this new chapter as a unified company.
