PM Oli to Leave for Official Visit to Spain

 KATHMANDU, JUNE 26 — Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli will leave for Spain this Saturday on an official visit, leading a Nepali delegation. He will attend the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, which is taking place from June 30 to July 3.

According to Nepal’s Ambassador to Spain, Shanil Nepal, all arrangements for the visit have been completed. He mentioned that the Nepali community in Spain is excited about the Prime Minister’s arrival.

During the trip, PM Oli is expected to hold meetings with Spanish leaders. The two countries will also sign Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to boost bilateral cooperation. In addition, the Prime Minister will meet with Nepali residents in Spain and engage with Spanish businesses. Other important meetings are also planned on the sidelines of the main event.

Nepal–Spain Relations: A Quick Look

  • Diplomatic ties between Nepal and Spain were established on May 13, 1968.

  • Nepal opened its embassy in Spain in 2018; Spain handles diplomatic relations with Nepal through its embassy in New Delhi.

  • There have been several high-level visits over the years:

    • King Birendra visited Spain in 1983.

    • Spanish King Juan Carlos I visited Nepal in 1987.

    • Former PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Minister Gokul Baskota, and President Bidya Devi Bhandari also visited Spain in recent years for various international events.

Spain as a Growing Partner

Spain, a member of the EU and Schengen Area, has a population of about 47 million and is one of the world’s leading tourist destinations, drawing over 12 million tourists annually. In 2018, nearly 20,000 Spanish tourists visited Nepal.

With its natural beauty, diverse culture, and adventure tourism opportunities, Nepal continues to attract Spanish and European travelers. Spain is also emerging as a new destination for Nepali migrant workers.

The Prime Minister’s visit is expected to further deepen ties between the two countries and promote Nepal as an attractive destination for tourism and investment in Europe.
