Prachanda Vows to Ensure Domestic Workers Get Minimum Wage Protection

 Lalitpur, June 24

Former Prime Minister and Chairperson of the CPN (Maoist Centre), Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda', has promised to push for changes in the law so that domestic workers are guaranteed minimum wages. Speaking at a national policy dialogue on domestic and informal care work organized by Yuwalaya in Lalitpur, he said that workers’ issues haven’t moved forward properly due to delays in making laws that match the Constitution’s spirit.

He said, “We will work to ensure domestic workers are legally included in the minimum wage system,” and added that real change can only happen when workers actually experience improvements in their lives. Prachanda also acknowledged that workers played a big role in his political success, saying, “I became Prime Minister three times because of workers. I’m grateful to those raising this issue and will keep supporting the legal protection and dignity of domestic workers.”

Member of Parliament Rama Koirala, a long-time supporter of trade unions, also spoke at the event. She said she has consistently advocated for workers’ rights and stressed that although Nepal has the potential to generate jobs, the government has failed to properly understand and support the domestic labor market.

Surendra Basnet, Vice-Chairperson of the National Youth Council, highlighted the importance of effectively enforcing laws that protect domestic workers’ rights.

Yuwalaya, a youth-led organization established in 2013, works on youth empowerment and social change. Its president, Dharma Raj Rimal, said the group is lobbying at all levels of government to make care and domestic work more respected and recognized as dignified professions.
