Special Court grants bail of Rs 3.5 million to former Prime Minister Madhav Nepal
KATHMANDU, JUNE 25 — The Special Court has ordered the release of former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal on a bail of Rs 3.5 million in connection with the Patanjali Yogpeeth land misappropriation case.
Yagya Raj Regmi, Information Officer at the court, said that Nepal could either pay the bail amount or submit a bank guarantee of the same value. The decision came after a hearing to decide whether Nepal should be kept in custody for further investigation.
A bench of Justices Tej Narayan Singh, Ram Bahadur Thapa, and Bidur Koirala issued the ruling. Nepal appeared in court on Wednesday afternoon, where his statement was recorded before the detention hearing began. Lawyers from both sides – five defending Nepal and five representing the government – presented their arguments.
The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed charges against 93 individuals, including the former Prime Minister, alleging their involvement in bypassing land ceiling rules to allow Patanjali Yogpeeth to purchase land illegally. The charge sheet also demands a fine of Rs 185.85 million in the case.
