KATHMANDU, JUNE 8 – Residents of Panauti are preparing to celebrate Hilejatra, also known as Jaya: Punhi, a three-day local festival that begins tomorrow. The event marks the end of the dry season and the beginning of rice planting.

Hilejatra is the town’s most important celebration, with worship ceremonies held at all local temples. One of the main attractions is the chariot procession of the Ganesh idol, which begins from the eastern side of the Indreshwar Mahadev temple.

On the full moon day, chariots carrying the deities Bhadrakali, Mahadev, and Indreshwar are pulled through the marketplace at dawn, often clashing as they cross paths—a dramatic and symbolic tradition.

The festival also features generous feasting and warm hospitality, with families welcoming guests into their homes to share food and celebrate together.
