Three workers die after bridge collapses in Panchthar

PANCHTHAR, JUNE 15 — Three workers who were injured when an under-construction Bailey bridge over the Hewa River in Panchthar collapsed have died during treatment late Saturday night.

The victims have been identified as Ruplal Chaudhary (22), Rajan Chaudhary (27), and Rakesh Chaudhary (22), all residents of Simara Sub-Metropolitan City-12 in Bara district. They were initially treated at Panchthar District Hospital but were later referred to Nobel Medical College in Biratnagar, where they passed away.

The 70-meter-long modular bridge, part of the Mechi Highway expansion project, was being installed by the Road Division Office, Ilam, when it suddenly collapsed on Wednesday, throwing six workers into the river. All of them sustained serious injuries.

The new bridge was meant to replace a 50-meter Bailey bridge that was swept away by floods on Asoj 12 last year. Before that, another 45-meter bridge at the same site had also been destroyed by flooding on Asar 2, 2080 BS.

This current bridge is being built by Super Saugat Light Builders JV at a cost of Rs 34.9 million, funded by a grant from the Government of India.
