16 Family Members Missing from Remote Village in Sindhuli, Police Begin Search
KATHMANDU, JULY 28 — A family of 16 members from the endangered Hayu community has gone missing from a remote village in Sindhuli district, sparking a search operation led by the police.
The family lived in an isolated house near a forest in Golanjor Rural Municipality-6. Locals raised the alarm after discovering the house empty on Monday. The kitchen—located separately from the main house—appeared to have been burned, though the rest of the belongings were left untouched.
According to preliminary reports, the family was last seen on Friday, July 25. Just a day before, each member had received Rs 4,000 as part of their quarterly social security payment under a government scheme for the Hayu community.
The family raised animals such as buffaloes, goats, pigs, and chickens. Some were found roaming freely on the property. Remains of recently slaughtered pigs and pork meat were also discovered. All their mobile phones are turned off, and the last signal from them was traced to Wards 8 and 9 of neighboring Ramechhap district. Police are now focusing their search in that area.
No natural disasters or nearby incidents have been reported that could explain the disappearance. Police have deployed teams in both Sindhuli and Ramechhap to locate the missing family. Authorities say the family had been struggling with debt after the death of the household head.
All 16 missing individuals have been identified, and the investigation is ongoing.
