43rd BP Memorial Day being observed across the country today

 Kathmandu, July 22

The 43rd Memorial Day of BP Koirala, Nepal’s first elected Prime Minister, is being observed today with various programs across the country. The day honors Koirala’s contributions to Nepal’s political, literary, and social development. Born on Bhadra 24, 1971 BS, he passed away on Saun 6, 2039 BS.

BP Koirala, founder of the Nepali Congress, is remembered for his strong belief in nationalism, democracy, socialism, and national reconciliation. After the 2015 BS parliamentary elections, he became Nepal’s first elected Prime Minister in Jestha 2016 BS.

Koirala also left a lasting mark in Nepali literature. A pioneer of psychological realism, he authored around 18 works, including Tin Ghumti, Modi Aayin, Hitler ra Yehudi, Sumnima, and Narendradai.

As Prime Minister, BP launched land reforms to end the birta system and supported the idea that those who worked the land should own it. However, his government was overthrown by the monarchy on 1 Poush, 2017 BS, and he, along with other leaders, was imprisoned—first in Singha Durbar and then in Sundarijal.

After being released for health reasons in 2025 BS, he lived in exile in India for eight years. Believing that Nepal’s national unity had weakened, he returned on 16 Poush, 2033 BS with the message of national unity and reconciliation.

The Sundarijal prison where he and other elected leaders were held has now been turned into the BP Museum. The museum displays items from BP’s life, a tanker used during the 2007 BS revolution, and even the hijacked Nepal Airlines plane from 2029 BS used to fund the democratic movement.

To mark the occasion, the Nepali Congress, its sister organizations, and the BP Museum Management Committee are organizing events throughout the day, according to NC Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel. Additionally, the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation will present the BP Koirala National Prize, said BP Museum Archaeological Officer Bhisma Baskota.
