95 killed, over 1,900 injured in road accidents in Jhapa in one year

Kathmandu, July 19

In the fiscal year 2081/82 (mid-July to mid-July), Jhapa district saw 1,296 road accidents, which resulted in 95 deaths and 2,073 injuries139 of them serious, according to the District Traffic Police Office.

During this period, 52,875 drivers faced action for various traffic violations, generating Rs 39.55 million in fines. Of these, 3,174 drivers were caught driving under the influence of alcohol, leading to fines totaling over Rs 1.8 million.

To raise awareness about road safety, 8,461 school students were given traffic education, and 1,250 people received training on the dangers of drunk driving.

The district also introduced modern systems like the Traffic Violation Record System (TVRS) and an online fine payment system to improve traffic management. New equipment added this year included 70 reflector belts, 30 traffic signboards, 4 magic lights, 3 breathalyzers, 7 computers, a GoPro camera, and a laptop.

The traffic safety campaign was carried out with help from local governments, schools, hospitals, media, and community organizations. Special awareness programs targeted students (grades 6 to 10), auto and city drivers, and the general public to encourage shared responsibility for safer roadsv
