Aesthetic Dance Studio introduces the Suresh Mishra Memorial Award on Guru Purnima.

Kathmandu, July 11

Aesthetic Dance Studio has started an annual award called the Suresh Mishra Smriti Puraskar to honor the memory of the respected Kathak dance teacher, Suresh Mishra. The first award ceremony took place on Guru Purnima, Thursday, at Kunja Theatre in Thapagaun.

Suresh Mishra, who passed away on April 21, was a beloved teacher and an important figure in Nepal’s classical dance community. He influenced many generations of dancers. This award aims to keep alive the values he stood for—humility, passion, discipline, and a deep love for dance.

The event began with a traditional Guru Vandana prayer, followed by a Krishna Vandana dance performed by the studio’s trainers.

Namrata KC, founder of Aesthetic Dance Studio and the person who started the award, spoke about her late teacher. She said, “This award is a tribute to Guru Suresh Mishra, who played a huge role in shaping my dance career and those of many other Kathak dancers. We promise to continue this award in the future.”

The highlight was the arrival of Mina Mishra, Suresh Mishra’s wife. She thanked Namrata KC for the initiative and said she felt her husband’s spirit was alive through this work.

The first recipient of the award was Anami Bohara, chosen for her project called “Stories in Motion.” Her goal is to bring students, teachers, and parents together through the storytelling power of Kathak dance. Her idea stood out among many entries submitted to the studio.

Speaking at the event, Anami shared her struggles as a dance student in Nepal. “There aren’t many opportunities and it’s hard to get access,” she said. “With this project, I want to make classical dance more open and present in schools and communities.”

The award money was Rs. 25,000 this time, raised from Aesthetic Dance Studio’s shows. The studio said the fund will grow with future performances and community support.

The program ended with a speech by Dinesh Mishra, Suresh Mishra’s younger brother. He fondly remembered his brother’s childhood, his dedication to dance, and his strong discipline throughout life.
