Akash Deep leads India to a series-leveling win over England in the second Test.

BIRMINGHAM, JULY 6 – So much for the idea that India would struggle without Jasprit Bumrah. Even though their top fast bowler was given a break, his replacement, Akash Deep, stepped up in a big way and became the unexpected hero of India's dominant 336-run win over England in the second Test at Edgbaston on Sunday.

Akash Deep took his first-ever five-wicket haul in Test cricket, removing four of England’s top five batters and later getting rid of their highest scorer, Jamie Smith, who made 88 runs. Deep ended the innings with bowling figures of 6 wickets for 99 runs, and 10 wickets for 187 in the match.

England were chasing a world-record target of 608 runs. They started the final day on 72 for 3 and were bowled out for 271, meaning India won comfortably. This was India’s first-ever Test victory at Edgbaston in nine tries. The win also tied the five-match series at 1-1, with the third Test at Lord’s starting on Thursday.

After losing the previous match at Headingley, where England chased down 371 runs on the final day, India bounced back strongly. Bumrah was rested to protect his fitness, but Akash Deep, who is 28 and has only played eight Test matches since his debut last year, proved he was more than capable. With his consistent line and length, he’s made a strong case to stay in the team—especially for the upcoming match at the historic Lord’s ground.

Captain Shubman Gill also starred for India, scoring a record 269 runs in the first innings and 161 in the second—an incredible performance that helped set up the big win.
