Bhandari Meets UML Chair Oli Before Central Committee Meeting, Confirms Political Comeback
Kathmandu, July 20
Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli met privately with former President Bidya Devi Bhandari today at the party’s central office in Lalitpur. The meeting took place a day before the UML Central Committee session is scheduled to begin.
After the meeting, Bhandari briefly spoke to the media, saying they discussed current national political issues. "I only talked with him about national politics," she said, adding that any other details would be shared through the party's official channels. She also confirmed that she has renewed her UML party membership.
The discussion between Oli and Bhandari lasted about an hour and a half. This was Bhandari’s first visit to the UML headquarters since completing her presidential term. She was welcomed by UML Vice-President Surendra Pandey and Central Office Secretary Dr. Bhisma Adhikari.
Bhandari, who previously served as UML Vice-Chair, has officially announced her return to active politics—a decision that has sparked debate within the party. The issue was discussed in recent UML secretariat and politburo meetings and was reportedly brought up again during today’s talks.
While some party members support her comeback, most politburo members voiced concerns during yesterday’s meeting. They argued that a former President, having held the nation’s highest constitutional office, should avoid returning to partisan politics.
