Brilliant India fights back with three centuries to draw 4th Test against England, keeping series hopes alive
MANCHESTER, July 27
The thrilling test series between England and India is heading toward a dramatic finish. Against all odds, India pulled off a hard-fought draw in the fourth Test at Old Trafford on Sunday, keeping their hopes alive of leveling the five-match series in the final game at The Oval. England currently leads 2-1.
India ended their second innings at 425-4, taking a 114-run lead, with three players scoring centuries. An early end to the final day’s play helped seal the draw.
Though not as dramatic as England’s 22-run win at Lord’s, the Manchester Test was intense throughout the five days. At one point, India looked set for a heavy defeat after collapsing to 0-2 in the first over of their second innings, still 311 runs behind. But the team rallied with a remarkable batting display.
Shubman Gill, the leading run-scorer of the series, anchored the recovery with his fourth century, supported by KL Rahul (90), Ravindra Jadeja (107 not out), and Washington Sundar (101 not out). Their solid partnerships wore down England’s bowlers and ensured the match ended in a draw.
India’s Remarkable Turnaround
The turnaround began when India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan on back-to-back balls from Chris Woakes before lunch on Saturday. At 0-2, things looked grim. But captain Shubman Gill stepped up and, along with Rahul, steadied the innings with a 188-run partnership.
Gill batted for nearly seven hours over two days, scoring 103 before being caught off Jofra Archer. He now has 722 runs in the series, while Rahul has 511.
After their dismissals, England briefly hoped to force a win, but Jadeja and Sundar built an unbeaten 200-plus partnership, ending those hopes and steering India to safety.
Stokes Shines But Falls Short
England captain Ben Stokes, who had been struggling with fitness, returned to bowl on the final day and immediately made an impact by dismissing Rahul lbw. He now has 17 wickets in the series and had taken five in India’s first innings.
However, his limited ability to bowl consistently due to injury was clearly felt. Stokes, who underwent surgery earlier this year, was seen clutching his leg after every ball on Sunday, limiting his effectiveness.
All Eyes on the Final Test
The series now heads to the final test at The Oval, starting Thursday, with everything to play for. Though England cannot lose the series, India is determined to avoid defeat and finish on equal terms.
With both sides trading wins—England chasing down a massive target at Headingley, India dominating at Edgbaston, and close contests at Lord’s and Old Trafford—this series is shaping up to be one of the most memorable in recent years.
