Kathmandu, July 7
Tourism Minister Badri Prasad Pandey has flown to France to attend the 47th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee being held in Paris.
During the meeting, Minister Pandey will formally propose that Tilaurakot — the historic site in Kapilvastu believed to be the childhood home of Gautam Buddha — be included on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Tourism Secretary Hari Prasad Mainali and other senior officials saw him off at Tribhuvan International Airport. The Tourism Ministry said the visit could be a key step toward gaining international recognition for Tilaurakot.
The UNESCO committee includes 21 member countries, including India, Japan, Qatar, and South Korea. A majority vote is needed to approve any new site for World Heritage status.
