Doctors End Protest After Reaching Deal with Government

KATHMANDU, July 8 – Doctors across Nepal have ended their protests after reaching a three-point agreement with the government and the Nepal Medical Association (NMA).

The decision came after a meeting between Health Minister Pradeep Paudel, Law Minister Ajay Kumar Chaurasiya, Industry Minister Damodar Bhandari, and representatives from the Ministry of Health, the Nepal Medical Council, and the NMA.

Doctors had been protesting a recent Consumer Court ruling that imposed heavy fines on physicians accused of serious negligence that allegedly led to patient deaths or complications. In response, medical professionals nationwide had halted all non-emergency services in both public and private hospitals since last Monday, severely affecting patient care.

As per the agreement:

  • A task force will be formed to recommend changes to existing laws and policies.

  • The task force must submit its report within seven days.

  • The government will seek Cabinet approval within 11 days to amend laws, including the Consumer Protection Act (2075 BS), and fast-track the amendment process.

With the agreement in place, the NMA has suspended all protests and announced the resumption of regular health services.

The protest was primarily triggered by the Consumer Court’s decision to fine doctors and hospitals for alleged medical negligence under the Consumer Protection Act.
