Everest climber Rajendra Mukhia Sunuwar was honored by Jubilant Elite Academy in Ilam.

KATHMANDU, July 27

Rajendra Mukhia Sunuwar, a young man from Sandakpur–1, Ilam, who recently climbed Mt. Everest, was honored on Sunday by Jubilant Elite Academy at a special program held at the school in Ilam’s district headquarters.

Nearly 900 students attended the ceremony, where school principal Bhushant Subba, founder Smriti Angdembe, and teachers presented Rajendra with traditional khadas and tokens of love in recognition of his incredible feat.

Before this, on Friday, July 25 (Shrawan 9), he was also felicitated by the Sunuwar Welfare Society (SWS) Ilam at a grand event held at Hotel Ilam Height. The celebration began with a traditional Kirati blessing ceremony known as “Sheer Gen, Khimti Gen, Yayu Gen, Kshama Gen,” followed by good wishes and offerings of Syambu and Sersyo by senior elder Na:so Prithasingh Sunuwar and clan representatives.

Rajendra reached the summit of Mt. Everest—the world’s highest peak—on May 23, 2025 (Jestha 9, 2082 B.S.) at 4:40 a.m.

To honor this historic accomplishment, SWS Ilam President Leela Sunuwar and other distinguished guests presented him with a traditional pagari (turban), khadas, garlands, and a certificate of recognition.

The program was attended by several dignitaries, including:

  • Kiran Mukhia, former Vice President of the SWS Central Committee

  • Naresh Shrestha, Ward Chair of Ilam–7

  • Bhim Chapagain, President of the Nepal Journalists Association Ilam

  • Torankumar Mukhia, Ward Member of Sandakpur–1

  • Pushpa Rai, Chairperson of Kiraya–Ilam

  • Chekin Tamang, Representative of Tamang Ghedung Ilam

  • Chakradeep Sunuwar, Provincial Secretary of SWS

  • Chyang Mukhia, Municipal Chairperson

Speakers at the event praised Rajendra’s inspiring journey and celebrated how his Everest climb brought pride to the Sunuwar community, which has long faced social marginalization. They congratulated him and wished him continued success.

The event was hosted by Anil Sunuwar, Vice President of SWS Ilam, and opened with a welcome speech by Ganga Mukhia, District Secretary.
