Five professors have emerged as strong candidates for the position of Vice-Chancellor at Tribhuvan University, as the selection process moves forward.
Kathmandu, July 6 – A total of twelve individuals are in the running for the position of Vice-Chancellor at Tribhuvan University (TU), with five professors emerging as the top contenders.
The selection process began on May 20, when Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli—who also serves as TU's Chancellor—formed a three-member committee to recommend candidates. The committee is led by Education Minister and TU Co-Chancellor Raghuji Pant.
The committee has already reviewed the biodata of all twelve applicants and completed the internal shortlisting process. “Only the formal task of recommending three names remains,” a source from the Ministry of Education said. “While twelve people applied, the real competition is between five professors.”
According to sources, the frontrunners are Prof. Dr. Binil Aryal, Prof. Dr. Yogendra Bahadur Gurung, Prof. Dr. Khadga KC, Prof. Dr. Upendra Koirala, and Prof. Dr. Dilli Upreti.
The need for a new Vice-Chancellor arose after Keshar Jung Baral resigned from the post on March 28, just 13 months into his four-year term. His resignation was accepted by Prime Minister Oli on April 10. A few days later, on April 15, Prof. Dr. Khadga KC was appointed acting Vice-Chancellor.
According to the rules, someone can serve in an acting capacity for up to three months. With that period nearing its end, the committee is preparing to submit its final list of three recommended candidates.
A meeting of the selection committee is scheduled for Sunday evening, where the final shortlist is expected to be finalized, the ministry source confirmed.
