Government Raises Minimum Monthly Wage for Workers to Rs 19,550

Kathmandu, July 18

The government has raised the minimum monthly wage for workers to Rs 19,550, starting from the new fiscal year 2082/83 BS.

The decision was made through a tripartite agreement involving the government, employers, and trade unions, and officially took effect on Thursday.

The new wage includes:

  • Basic salary: Rs 12,170

  • Dearness allowance: Rs 7,380
This replaces the previous minimum wage of Rs 17,300. The update follows Section 107 of the Labour Act, 2074 BS, which requires the minimum wage to be reviewed every two years.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli welcomed the decision on social media, stating that “progress is not possible without labour, and prosperity is meaningless without respect for workers.” He added that the wage increase builds on previous reforms like the contribution-based social security scheme, which now covers 2.1 million workers.

The private sector called the move important for promoting stable labour relations, while trade unions celebrated it as a historic victory, highlighting that workers were meaningfully involved in the wage negotiation process for the first time.
