Harry Kane scored two goals to help Bayern Munich defeat Flamengo 4-2 and move on to the next round of the Club World Cup.
MIAMI GARDENS, June 30 — Harry Kane scored twice as Bayern Munich defeated Flamengo 4-2 in the Club World Cup round of 16 on Sunday. After losing to Benfica last week, the German champions bounced back strong, taking an early lead and holding off a Flamengo comeback to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
Bayern will now face Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on Saturday in Atlanta. Earlier in the day, PSG dominated Inter Miami with a 4-0 win, despite the presence of Lionel Messi.
Bayern started fast, going up 1-0 in the 6th minute when Flamengo’s Erick Pulgar accidentally scored an own goal off a Joshua Kimmich corner. Just three minutes later, Harry Kane added a second with a shot that deflected into the net. He scored again in the 73rd minute after a pass from Kimmich, bringing his total to three goals in the tournament.
Flamengo had several chances but couldn’t make the most of them. Luiz Araújo came close with a powerful left-footed strike, but Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer made a great save. Gerson gave Flamengo some hope with a goal in the 32nd minute to make it 2-1, but Leon Goretzka quickly made it 3-1 for Bayern.
In the second half, Flamengo narrowed the gap to 3-2 after Jorginho scored from the penalty spot in the 54th minute, sending Neuer the wrong way. However, Kane sealed the game with his second goal, restoring Bayern’s two-goal advantage.
The match took place at the 65,000-seat Hard Rock Stadium, home of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins, and was nearly packed, with many Flamengo fans in attendance.
Key Moment:
Jorginho’s penalty in the 54th minute gave Flamengo a brief boost, but Kane’s second goal just 20 minutes later ended their hopes.
What it means:
Bayern's victory means at least four European teams will reach the quarterfinals. It also sets up a high-profile rematch of the 2020 Champions League final between Bayern and PSG.
What they said:
-
Harry Kane: "People often judge me by the number of goals I score, and that’s fair. But I’ll do whatever it takes to help my team win."
-
Flamengo coach Filipe Luis: "We had our chances, but Bayern was the better team today. That early own goal from the corner hurt our confidence."
