Home Minister promises action to end discrimination against menstruating women
Kathmandu, July 17 – Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has announced that anyone who forces menstruating women to stay in isolation huts will be denied access to local government services. He said a nationwide directive will soon be issued to implement this policy.
Speaking at a meeting with the Inter-Party Women’s Alliance in Kathmandu, Minister Lekhak said the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration will be asked to take necessary steps to enforce the decision.
He stressed that superstition continues to fuel harmful practices like menstrual discrimination and urged the Alliance to support efforts to end such traditions.
“The government is committed to ending all forms of violence against women, including sexual violence,” Lekhak said. “We take women’s dignity, safety, and rights seriously, and those responsible for such abuse will be punished.”
During the meeting, Alliance President Mamata Giri handed over a memorandum demanding the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women. The Alliance also expressed concern over the increasing incidents of violence and inequality women face across the country.
In response, Minister Lekhak acknowledged the concerns and promised that the government would work closely with stakeholders to promote women’s rights and enforce laws against gender-based violence and discrimination.
