Karnali Still Has 50 Ropeways in Use Despite Plan to Eliminate Them

KATHMANDU, July 21 – Even though there’s a policy in place to get rid of tuins—the manually operated ropeways used to cross rivers—Karnali Province still has 50 of them in use across its seven districts.

Ramesh Subedi, Senior Divisional Engineer at the Karnali Province Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Urban Development, said the province is working to replace these dangerous ropeways with safer suspension bridges. The ministry collected this data from seven out of the province’s ten districts.

Humla has the most tuins, with 15 in total—six of which cross the Karnali River. Kalikot and Jajarkot each reported 12, Dolpa has three, and Dailekh and Mugu have two each. Surkhet still has eight in operation. Data from Salyan, Jumla, and Rukum West hasn’t been received yet.

To support the goal of making Karnali a tuin-free province within this fiscal year, the provincial government has set aside Rs 15 million to build the necessary infrastructure, Subedi said.
