Ncell to Introduce New Mobile Numbers Starting with 971
KATHMANDU, July 1 — Ncell will soon begin issuing new mobile numbers starting with the 971 prefix, after receiving approval from the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA). The company plans to start distributing SIM cards with the new number series by July 31.
The NTA approved the 971 range on May 28, 2025, as existing prefixes—980, 981, 982, and 970—are nearing capacity. This move is part of the NTA’s National Numbering Allocation Plan, aimed at managing mobile number resources efficiently to meet rising demand.
Mobile numbers are no longer just for calls and texts—they’re now widely used for things like receiving OTPs, registering for apps and online services, and carrying out digital financial transactions.
Ncell has requested all service providers, government agencies, private companies, and financial institutions to update their systems to support the new 971 numbers to ensure smooth service for users.
