New cycling trail opens in Mustang amid 55% rise in tourist arrivals
Kathmandu, July 18 – A new 8-kilometre cycling trail from Jomsom (Gharapjhong-4) to Dharkajung (Baragung Muktikshetra-5) has been completed in Mustang, aiming to promote tourism in the region. The project was built with a budget of Rs 2 million and includes two iron bridges along the route.
According to Prem Paudel, Chief of the Tourism and Industry Office Mustang, the trail offers an alternative route for cyclists heading toward Dolpa, allowing them to avoid the busy Jomsom-Kagbeni road. The route passes through Dhalkedanda at an altitude of over 4,000 meters, offering stunning views of Upper and Lower Mustang, the Nepal-China border, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, the Kali Gandaki corridor, and surrounding villages.
The trail's launch comes at a time when Mustang is experiencing a significant increase in tourism. The district received 705,000 visitors in the fiscal year 2081/82, a 55% rise compared to the previous year, according to Bishal Adhikari, Information Officer at the District Police Office.
Officials credit the growth to better road access via the Beni-Jomsom-Korala route and increasing interest in Mustang’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and religious significance.
