New Trekking Trail Opens on the Way to Dhaulagiri Base Camp
Myagdi (Beni), July 25
A new trekking route leading to the base camp of Mt. Dhaulagiri — the world’s seventh-highest peak at 8,167 meters — has been built in Mudi, located in Ward 4 of Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality, Myagdi.
The trail stretches 6.5 kilometers from the Italy Base Camp in Mudi to the Swiss Base Camp, passing through the Japanese Camp along the way. It was constructed with Rs 5.4 million in federal funding during the last fiscal year (2024/25), with local residents also contributing labor worth Rs 500,000, according to Kul Bahadur Gharti, Secretary of the Dhaulagiri Mountain Trekking Trail Construction Users Committee.
One part of the trail, between the Japanese and Swiss camp areas, is considered high-risk due to glacier activity.
To support trekkers, two traditional wooden rest stops and two bridges have been built along the route. Information boards have been placed at four points and signboards at five locations to guide visitors. Around one kilometer of the trail has also been paved with stone steps, added Janak Dhanuk, Sub-Engineer at the rural municipality.
Efforts were also made to widen the narrow and winding paths, especially in cliffside and forested areas, to make the trek safer. Chairperson of Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality, Prem Prasad Pun, said the local government is focused on improving access and safety along the route to encourage more trekking activity in the region.
