NMA Shuts Down All Services Except Emergency Care in Ongoing Protest
KATHMANDU, July 8 – Doctors and health workers across Nepal continued their protest today, shutting down all medical services except emergency care.
The Nepal Medical Association (NMA) had announced the protest starting Monday, with both private and public hospitals joining in to show solidarity. The NMA is demanding changes to the Consumer Protection Act, 2075 BS, which it says unfairly targets medical professionals.
The protest was extended after the government failed to take meaningful action to address their concerns, according to an NMA statement.
The doctors are protesting a recent Consumer Court ruling that found some hospitals and doctors guilty of negligence and ordered them to pay compensation to patients. The NMA argues that medical practice, being a highly sensitive and science-based profession, should not be judged like other sectors.
Dr. Sanjeev Tiwari, NMA General Secretary, said that issues related to medical negligence should be handled by the Nepal Medical Council, not by consumer courts.
The NMA also called on doctors and health workers in Kathmandu to join a sit-in protest at Maitighar Mandala, while those outside the Valley were urged to demonstrate at designated local spots.
