Over 4,400 Vehicles Involved in Road Accidents in Just One Month
Kathmandu, July 23 – In just one month—from June 15 to July 16 (Ashad)—a total of 4,428 vehicles were involved in road accidents across Nepal, according to Nepal Police data. Motorcycles were involved in more than half of the incidents, with 2,505 accidents, making up 56.56% of the total.
Other vehicles involved included 794 jeeps, cars, and microbuses; 196 buses; 286 trucks, tankers, and tippers; 114 tractors; 249 tempos; 262 bicycles and rickshaws; 9 heavy equipment vehicles like dozers and excavators; and 13 unspecified vehicles.
Out of 2,922 accidents where the time of the incident was recorded, the highest number—1,074 crashes (36.76%)—occurred between 6 PM and midnight. Another 1,046 (35.80%) happened between noon and 6 PM. Morning accidents (6 AM to noon) accounted for 657 cases (22.48%), while 144 incidents (4.96%) occurred between midnight and 6 AM. One accident happened at an unspecified time.
During the same period, traffic police issued 152,498 fines, collecting over Rs 120 million in revenue. Most fines were related to speeding, drunk driving, and driving without a valid license.
Speeding was the leading cause of accidents, contributing to 1,450 cases. Driving under the influence caused 188 crashes, while 173 incidents involved drivers without a license. Additionally, 143 accidents occurred while pedestrians were crossing the road, and 82 took place during overtaking.
The month saw a tragic loss of lives, with 239 people killed—186 men, 36 women, 12 boys, and 5 girls. There were 625 cases of serious injuries and 3,491 minor injuries, affecting men, women, and children alike.
