People affected by snow leopard attacks in Upper Mustang have been given relief payments as support for their losses.

Mustang, July 19 — Livestock farmers in Upper Mustang who suffered losses due to snow leopard attacks have received relief payments to help recover from the damage.

According to Umesh Paudel, Chief of the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) office in Lomanthang, a total of Rs 1.1 million was distributed to affected farmers for livestock lost in attacks during the last fiscal year. Of this, 43 percent was given as compensation for the losses, while the rest was provided as additional support.

The ACAP office is working to ensure that relief is provided within a few months of any incident. Notices are regularly issued to encourage farmers to apply for compensation.

A human-wildlife conflict fund is also being set up in response to the increasing number of such incidents.

The relief payments were provided by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation through ACAP, under the guidelines of the Wildlife Loss Directive, 2080.
