PM Oli urges timely completion of development projects
Kathmandu, July 12 —
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has instructed government officials to finish development projects on time and stop delaying work and overspending, which he said causes hardship for the public.
Speaking at the 54th meeting of the National Development Problems Resolution Committee in Singha Durbar on Friday, PM Oli urged ministers, secretaries, and project chiefs to find out what’s slowing down progress and fix those issues immediately.
He expressed frustration that even though the tunnel for the Sunkoshi-Marin Diversion project is complete, other parts of the project haven’t moved forward. “Delays like this can’t continue,” he said. “If problems aren’t addressed, we can’t expect timely results or proper use of funds.”
He also pointed out the shortage of chemical fertilizers, despite having a policy to provide subsidies to farmers. “Why is there still a crisis? Why can’t we ensure enough supply instead of just giving grants?” he asked.
The Prime Minister criticized the cost overruns in development projects. “Some projects that were planned at Rs. 12 billion are completed only after costs balloon to Rs. 52 billion. How does this happen? Shouldn’t those responsible face action?” he said.
He also suggested exploring other options if contractors fail to complete projects on time and called for a major shift in how development work is carried out.
The meeting, which lasted four hours, was attended by Deputy Prime Ministers, Ministers, Chief Ministers, the Chief Secretary, and other top officials. They discussed challenges faced by different ministries.
During the meeting, Vice Chairman of the National Planning Commission, Prof. Dr. Shivraj Adhikari, presented data on the country’s economic status, public finance, social and infrastructure progress, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Nepal’s journey toward becoming a developing country.
