Rautahat hit hard by drought; local officials ask federal government for urgent help

Rautahat, July 24
Rautahat district is facing a serious humanitarian crisis due to a prolonged drought, according to the District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC). In a meeting held at the District Administration Office in Gaur, officials decided to request urgent support from the federal government, especially for drinking water and irrigation.

The meeting, chaired by Chief District Officer Binod Kumar Khadka, concluded that water sources have dried up in many areas, particularly in Ishnath, Maulapur, Fatuwabijaypur, and Katahariya. Hand pumps no longer work, and even motorized water systems are failing.

To address the immediate crisis, the committee recommended installing deep boring systems using commercial water pumps. They also suggested similar measures for irrigation and called for relief packages to support drought-affected farmers.

Maulapur Mayor Rina Sah stressed that water shortages were severe in her area, especially for farmers who rely on irrigation. She called for urgent short-term support and long-term solutions.

CPN (Unified Socialist) leader Rewant Jha linked the crisis to deforestation in the Chure region and urged the government to treat the issue seriously by developing both immediate and future plans to support farmers.

Janamat Party leader Sheikh Jamshed said setting up deep boring systems takes time and pushed the government to immediately provide relief to affected communities.

Mayors from Gaur, Rajdevi, Durgabhagwati, Katahariya, and Baudhimai municipalities also expressed concern over the worsening water shortage in their towns.

The meeting included representatives from the District Coordination Committee, security agencies, political parties, government offices, and civil society organizations.
