Rift emerges in the alliance just six months after its formation.

 KATHMANDU, July 27

A serious disagreement has surfaced among seven Madhes-based parties within the newly formed Federal Democratic Front—just under six months since its creation—over the upcoming by-election in Rupandehi-3.

The by-election, scheduled for November 3, has become a point of contention. The Election Commission has announced that nominations will be accepted on October 7, with the final list of candidates and election symbols to be published on October 9.

Out of the seven parties in the alliance, six support the Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP) to represent the Front in Rupandehi-3. However, the Janamat Party, led by CK Raut, has refused to agree.

According to Janamat spokesperson Sharad Singh Yadav, the party believes the alliance was created to push for broader issues like constitutional amendments for the Madhes region—not for forming electoral alliances. “We’re already preparing to run our own candidate,” Yadav said, recalling how they contested the by-election in Bara-2 against Upendra Yadav, even while part of the same coalition.

Yadav also claimed that some parties in the Front are trying to remove Janamat from the government to take its place. He added that the party is reconsidering its involvement in the Federal Democratic Front entirely.

The Janamat Party also raised concerns over the exclusion of Ashok Rai's Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP)—the largest Madhes-based party with seven MPs—from the alliance, questioning the sincerity of the Front’s leadership. Yadav accused Upendra Yadav’s JSP-Nepal of using political tactics to push Janamat out of both the ruling coalition and the Madhes provincial government.

Meanwhile, Rastriya Mukti Party-Nepal leader Anil Mahaseth dismissed Janamat’s objections, saying they were just excuses to justify going solo in the by-election. He warned that if Janamat skips today’s meeting of the alliance, it would signal their exit from the Front.

Mahaseth urged Janamat to reconsider, emphasizing the need for unity among Madhes-based parties during these difficult times.

The seven parties in the Federal Democratic Front are:

  1. JSP-Nepal (Upendra Yadav)

  2. Loktantrik Samajwadi Party-Nepal (Mahantha Thakur)

  3. Rastriya Mukti Party-Nepal (Rajendra Mahato)

  4. Janamat Party (C.K. Raut)

  5. Nagarik Unmukti Party

  6. Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party (Bhrishesh Chandra Lal)

  7. Janata Pragatisheel Party (Hridayesh Tripathi)

With the by-election nearing, the cracks within the alliance appear to be widening.
