"Taekwondo and Toastmasters: Strength in Body, Confidence in Speech"

When you hear “Toastmasters,” you probably think of speeches, stage presence, or the butterflies that come before public speaking. But one special day, the SAIM Toastmasters Club completely changed that image—with an event that mixed martial arts with public speaking in a truly unexpected way.

SAIM Toastmasters Club from District 41, Division C, Area C3 organized a creative and energetic session called “Taekwondo Toastmasters.” The idea was simple yet powerful: combine the strength and discipline of Taekwondo with the confidence and communication skills of Toastmasters.

Instead of the usual speeches and table topics, participants geared up for something different—Taekwondo basics, self-defense techniques, and fun-filled games. It was an exciting mix of movement, learning, and laughter that left everyone energized and inspired.

Why Taekwondo?

Many see Taekwondo as just a sport or a set of moves—but it’s much more. It teaches self-control, confidence, respect, and resilience—the very same values Toastmasters encourages in its members. That made this collaboration a perfect fit.

The session was led by Mr. Tonil Karmacharya, a 7th Dan black belt with over 30 years of experience, and his student Nitendra Bajracharya, a 3rd Dan black belt. They started by sharing the origins and philosophy of Taekwondo, then guided participants through warm-ups, stretching, basic moves, and later, practical self-defense techniques. With their expert instruction, everyone was able to learn something new—whether it was a new kick or a new mindset.

Learning with Laughter

Of course, no Toastmasters event is complete without fun—and this one delivered. One of the highlights was a balloon-popping game where participants tied balloons to their ankles and tried to pop others' balloons while protecting their own. The room echoed with laughter, cheers, and flying feet as everyone embraced the playful chaos.

The event was also honored by the presence of Area Director Ankush Adhikari and Division Director Saroj Tamrakar, who shared encouraging words and praised the club’s creativity and initiative.

More Than Just a Meeting

“Taekwondo Toastmasters” wasn’t just a change in format—it was a bold message: Toastmasters isn’t only about speeches. It’s about growing in every way—mentally, emotionally, and physically.

At first glance, public speaking and martial arts may seem unrelated. But both teach discipline, confidence, and the importance of being present. Whether you’re standing on a mat or a stage, you need focus, courage, and control. Both Taekwondo and Toastmasters challenge you to improve, express yourself, and lead with purpose.

This unique event created a space where people from different backgrounds came together, learned from each other, and stepped out of their comfort zones. Toastmasters got a taste of martial arts, and martial artists explored the world of public speaking. It was a beautiful blend of communication and confidence—a win for everyone.

A Celebration of Growth and Connection

Above all, “Taekwondo Toastmasters” reminded everyone that Toastmasters is about more than just routines. Each meeting is a new experience, filled with growth, energy, and connection. It’s a place where friendships are formed, confidence is built, and everyone belongs—whether you want to be a better speaker, a better leader, or simply a better version of yourself.

In today’s busy world, this event showed that sometimes the best way to recharge is through movement and motivation—a perfect mix of punches and punchlines. And sometimes, the path to personal growth means getting a little sweaty, a little sore, and a lot inspired.

"Taekwondo Toastmasters" wasn’t just an event—it was a celebration of courage, community, and connection.

The SAIM Toastmasters Club meets every Wednesday at 6 PM at SAIM College, Old Baneshwor. Come join in—you never know what’s in store next!
