The Yak & Yeti Tradition, Reimagined
Kathmandu, July 29
Since opening in 1977, Hotel Yak & Yeti has been more than just a hotel — it’s been a quiet symbol of elegance in the middle of Kathmandu. Located inside the historic Lal Durbar Palace, it has carried its rich heritage with grace. Now, the hotel is entering a new chapter, with renovated rooms, new experiences, and a fresh leadership team that’s redefining what it means to be a heritage hotel.
“We’re staying true to what Yak & Yeti has always been — a timeless classic — but we’re raising the bar by blending tradition with modern luxury,” says General Manager Gopinath Gopalan, who brings over 25 years of experience in the global hospitality industry. “We’re not just a place to stay. We want to be a destination that truly represents Nepal.”
The updated rooms reflect this balance between history and modern comfort. The Heritage Wing keeps the charm of the past, with its carved wood panels, brass details, and old palace architecture. Its two Presidential Suites, known for hosting world leaders and celebrities, offer both cultural richness and private luxury. Many features have been preserved from the original palace or carefully recreated using traditional methods.
Meanwhile, the Deluxe Wing has a more modern style — calm, clean, and inspired by Nepal’s natural beauty. Whether guests choose a Club Room or Executive Suite, the focus is on relaxed luxury. Club Shangri-La, with its exclusive lounge and personalized services, adds an extra touch of elegance.
Mr. Gopalan says this transformation is driven by a shared vision and a focus on people. “When I took on this role, I wanted every department to move in the same direction. With the commitment of our team, we’re creating an experience that’s both loyal to our history and tailored to each guest.”
One of the best examples of this vision is the Lal Durbar Convention Centre — the only convention venue in Nepal located inside a historic palace. It hosts everything from diplomatic events and business meetings to weddings and art shows, all set among chandeliers, courtyards, and well-kept gardens. With spaces like the Regal Ballroom and Madhuban Garden, every event feels special. A professional events team helps plan every detail — from food to lighting — with care.
For those wanting a more personal experience, Yak & Yeti is currently offering a Monsoon Staycation for NPR 12,999 (for two people). This includes breakfast at Spice Room, discounts on meals and laundry, and full access to Club Nirvana — which features a gym, steam room, sauna, and a garden-side pool. Guests can also take a guided Palace Tour and enjoy flexible check-in and check-out times for a more relaxed stay.
While many things at Yak & Yeti are being refreshed — new rooms, better technology, improved services — its heart remains the same. And for Mr. Gopalan, that heart lies in the people. “In hospitality, you’re only as good as the experience you gave your last guest,” he says. “Every interaction matters. Every visit becomes part of our story — and shows the trust our guests have in us.”
