Today is Guru Purnima, a day to honor and celebrate teachers and mentors.
Kathmandu, July 10
Today, people are celebrating Guru Purnima, also called Asad Shukla Purnima, a special day to honor and thank teachers and mentors. It holds both religious and cultural importance as a time to recognize gurus—those who share wisdom and guide others toward knowledge and enlightenment.
Schools and colleges observe this day as Teachers’ Day, where students show appreciation to their teachers and professors for their role in their education and growth. The word "Guru" comes from “Gu” meaning darkness and “Ru” meaning light. A guru is someone who removes the darkness of ignorance by bringing the light of knowledge, explains Prof. Dr. Devmani Bhattarai, a theologian and member of the Nepal Panchang Nirnayak Bikas Samiti.
Today is also celebrated as Vyas Jayanti, honoring Ved Vyas, the sage who wrote 18 Puranas and 18 Upapuranas in simple Sanskrit to explain the Vedas. He divided the Vedas into four parts: Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda.
According to legend, Ved Vyas was born on the full moon day of the Ashadha month, which is why Vyas Jayanti is observed on this day.
