Tourism Minister discusses safer alternative route for climbing Mount Everest

 Kathmandu, July 19

Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Badri Prasad Pandey, has emphasized the need to find a safer alternative route to the summit of Mount Everest (Sagarmatha), saying that the current path has become increasingly dangerous for climbers.

Speaking at a discussion held at the Ministry on Friday, Minister Pandey said the traditional route—from the Khumbu Icefall to Camp 1—is becoming more complex and risky, and that it's time to consider safer, environmentally friendly, and sustainable options.

"Sagarmatha is a symbol of our national pride. Thousands of Nepali and foreign climbers attempt the summit every year. We must prioritize their safety by exploring more secure alternatives," Pandey said.

During the meeting, renowned French mountaineer Marc Batard and Nepali climber Pemba Kaji Sherpa presented detailed findings, including research, surveys, and photographs related to a possible new route to the summit. Both have been actively working to identify a safer path since 2018.
