Two Farmers Electrocuted While Irrigating Fields in Drought-Stricken Rautahat

Rautahat, July 23 – Two people have died in separate electrocution incidents in Rautahat district over the past two days while using electric water pumps to irrigate their fields during a prolonged drought.

On Wednesday morning, 40-year-old Rambabu Mukhiya from Bishunpura Manpur, Madhav Narayan Municipality-4, was electrocuted while trying to operate an electric pump for rice plantation. He was seriously injured and rushed to the Provincial Hospital in Gaur, but doctors declared him dead at 7:50 AM, according to the Area Police Office in Garuda.

A similar incident occurred the day before. Moktar Dewan, 52, of Jamuniya in Katahariya Municipality-2, died after receiving an electric shock from a pump wire while irrigating his field. He was taken to Grandi Hospital in Garuda but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajan Karki confirmed that both bodies have been sent to the Provincial Hospital in Gaur for post-mortem, and investigations are ongoing.

With the ongoing drought, many farmers have turned to electric motors for irrigation. However, a lack of safety awareness and insufficient preventive measures from local authorities and the Nepal Electricity Authority have made such accidents increasingly common. In just the past two months, over 25 people across Nepal have died in similar incidents involving electric pumps.
