Egg Prices Go Up
Chitwan, June 25 – The price of eggs has gone up.
The Nepal Layers Poultry Breeders Association has announced new support prices starting today. Now, farms in Chitwan will sell large-sized eggs at Rs. 480 per crate and medium-sized ones at Rs. 450. That’s an increase of Rs. 30 per crate (which holds 30 eggs).
According to the Association’s president, Binod Pokharel, the price hike is due to a drop in production and rising demand. Four months ago, farms were producing around 40,000 cartons of eggs a day. Now, that number has dropped to between 28,000 and 30,000.
Dr. Ananta Dahal, associate professor at Agriculture and Forestry University in Rampur, explained that high temperatures are affecting the chickens' appetite, leading to lower egg production. Overall, production is down by about 25%.
He added that during this season, chickens often suffer from diseases, and the rise in humidity due to rainfall causes heat stress, which further reduces their ability to lay eggs.
Dr. Bijay Kumar Shrestha, head of the National Poultry Disease Research Laboratory in Bharatpur, also reported that samples from 50 farms in Chitwan and nearby areas tested positive for the H9 (H9N2) virus, a common poultry disease.
