Government Approves National AI Policy
Kathmandu, August 14 — The government has approved the National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy, 2082 BS. The policy, prepared by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, was endorsed by the Cabinet in its meeting on August 11.
Communications and Information Technology Minister and government spokesperson Prithvi Subba Gurung announced the decision while sharing the outcomes of the Cabinet meeting.
In other decisions, the Cabinet appointed Sandip Rai from Panchthar as the new General Manager of Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS). The post had been vacant for over a month after the previous GM retired at the end of his four-year term.
The government also decided to impose toll fees on vehicles using the Nagdhunga Expressway. Cars and vans will pay Rs 65 to enter Kathmandu and Rs 60 to exit. Minibuses and smaller trucks will be charged Rs 125 and Rs 80 respectively, while buses and larger trucks will pay Rs 260 and Rs 200. Heavy vehicles will pay Rs 600 inbound and Rs 250 outbound.
The Cabinet approved Madhesh Province Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh’s visit to Switzerland from August 31 to September 6 for a study tour on inter-governmental cooperation in the Swiss federal system.
It also allowed Deputy Auditor General Bindu Bista to attend an ASOSAI event in the Philippines from September 22–26 and accepted a USD 90 million (about Rs 12.5 billion) grant from South Korea for Gandaki Technical School’s infrastructure development.
The minimum support price for the current fiscal year has been set at Rs 3,463.81 per quintal for coarse unhusked rice and Rs 3,628.33 for medium rice.
Additionally, permission was granted for the Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation to attend the Global Infrastructure Cooperation Conference 2025 in Seoul, South Korea, from September 16–18; the Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport to join the Asia-Pacific Regional Road Safety Conference in Manila, Philippines, from September 9–11; and the Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation to represent Nepal at the 42nd ICAO Assembly in Montreal, Canada, from September 23 to October 3.
The Cabinet also approved the creation of 725 temporary officer-level positions under the Ministry of Labour, Transport, and Social Security for the 2082–83 fiscal year (2025–26).
