Hepatitis B vaccination drive starts in remote Gorkha village

Gorkha – A Hepatitis B vaccination campaign has started in a remote village of Gorkha, where many residents have been found infected with the disease.

The camp is being held at the Rana Vaccination Center in Chumnubri-5, Bihi, a rural municipality bordering Tibet. Organized by Kimolung Foundation Nepal in coordination with the local government, the camp began on Wednesday and will run for 10 days at various vaccination centers in Wards 4 and 5 of Chumnubri.

The program was jointly inaugurated by Nani Babu Dani, Chief of the Immunization Section at the Provincial Public Health Office, Gorkha, and Wangchuk Rapten Lama, founder president of the foundation. On the first day, 58 people were screened—31 women and 27 men—with three individuals (two women and one man) testing positive for Hepatitis B.

At the Rana Vaccination Center, 44 people received the Hepatitis B vaccine on the first day. Of 11 children under 16 who were tested but not vaccinated, three were found to be infected.

The camp was formally inaugurated under the chairmanship of Ward No. 5 Chairman Kalden Chewang Lama, with Nani Babu Dani as the chief guest.

The vaccination program will continue at several locations over the coming days, including Bihi Health Post, Kwak village, Serang Gumba, Gap Nubri Basic School, Prok Health Institution, Namrung and Larke Bazaar Health Post, and Gap Ward Office.

Screening will be done for all attendees, but the vaccine will be administered only to individuals aged 16 and above. The vaccination requires three doses: the second dose one month after the first, and the final dose six months after the first.

According to Wangchuk Rapten Lama, the camp was organized because Hepatitis B infections have been increasingly detected in the area. Many locals were found infected during health checkups for foreign employment, preventing them from working abroad. The campaign aims to reduce such cases and improve public health in the region.
