Historic climb: 15 mountaineers preparing to summit Api Peak

Kathmandu, Aug 29 – For the first time in history, 15 climbers are preparing to scale Api Peak in Darchula district of Sudurpaschim Province.

At a farewell event organized by the Nepal Mountaineering Association on Friday, Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Badri Prasad Pandey, wished the team success. The government recently granted a climbing permit for Api Himal, one of the major peaks in far-western Nepal.

Minister Pandey said this first ascent would be a historic achievement not only for Sudurpaschim but for the whole country. He also noted that the expedition follows the government’s recent decision to waive climbing fees for 97 peaks in Sudurpaschim and Karnali for the next two years.

He stressed that mountaineering is key to promoting Nepal internationally and praised both Sherpa and non-Sherpa climbers for their role in strengthening Nepal’s mountaineering reputation. “This expedition will help boost tourism across Sudurpaschim and Karnali provinces,” he added.

All 15 climbers come from Api Rural Municipality in Darchula.
