In Karnali, 42% of people experience anxiety, while 23% suffer from depression.

 Karnali, Aug 28

A survey has found that 42% of people in Karnali Province suffer from anxiety, 23% from depression, and 11.7% from other mental health issues.

These findings were shared during the Mid-term Review and Interaction on the Mental Health and Psychosocial Strategy and Action Plan 2079-2087, organized by the Karnali Province Ministry of Social Development with support from the Swiss Government and CMC Nepal in Surkhet Birendranagar on Wednesday.

Dr. Pashupati Mahat, Director of CMC Nepal, presented data from the National Health Research Council, highlighting the prevalence of anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems, and emphasized the need for government investment in prevention.

Minister for Social Development Ghanashyam Bhandari said addressing mental health issues requires joint efforts. He noted that Karnali Province has developed and implemented its own Mental Health and Psychosocial Strategy and Action Plan—the first among Nepal’s seven provinces.

Psychiatrist Dr. Sushil Samdarshi outlined the strategy’s future direction, policies, and progress, while Public Health Officer Kiran Kumar Sharma shared ongoing provincial initiatives to improve mental health.

Himal Gaire, Head of Policy, Strategy, and Good Governance at CMC Nepal, explained that the mid-term review aims to address gaps in the current plan, especially focusing on issues in Upper Karnali. He added that the mental health of residents in districts like Rukum Paschim, where many return after working abroad, is particularly concerning.
