India said it does not agree with the United States and European Union criticizing its decision to import oil from Russia. India explained that buying Russian oil helps keep fuel prices stable and affordable for its people.

On Monday, India pushed back against the United States and the European Union for criticizing its decision to import oil from Russia, calling their remarks unfair and unreasonable.

Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, said in a statement that buying Russian oil is important for India to keep fuel prices affordable and stable for its people.

This statement came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to raise tariffs on India because of its trade in Russian oil.

Jaiswal pointed out that the countries criticizing India are also trading with Russia, but unlike India, they don’t have a critical need to do so.

He explained that India started buying discounted Russian oil after the Ukraine conflict began, which caused traditional suppliers to send more oil to Europe instead. At that time, even the U.S. encouraged India to buy Russian oil to help stabilize global energy markets.

The spokesperson also highlighted that the EU’s trade with Russia is much bigger than India’s. In 2024, the EU had about 67.5 billion euros worth of trade in goods with Russia, plus another 17.2 billion euros in services in 2023—far more than India’s total trade with Russia in those years.
