Lawmakers urge government to address fertilizer shortage, road damage, and cattle disease

KATHMANDU, AUGUST 14 – Members of the House of Representatives (HoR) raised several urgent issues in today’s Zero Hour session, including the critical need to supply fertilizers to farmers. Lawmakers expressed concern over the difficulties farmers are facing due to a fertilizer shortage during the peak of the paddy planting season.

Bhim Prasad Acharya questioned, “After the hard work of planting paddy, farmers now face a fertilizer shortage. They have already suffered from drought in previous years. Why does this shortage happen every year? Why aren’t fertilizers managed on time?”

Other parliamentarians, including Ram Kumar Rai, Ram Shankar Yadav, and Ram Krishna Yadav, emphasized the importance of providing fertilizers on time and in sufficient quantities.

Ramhari Khatiwada raised concerns about the rising deaths of cattle from lumpy skin disease and called for immediate action to control the outbreak.

Bhanubhakta Joshi highlighted the poor condition of roads across the country, worsened by the monsoon, and urged the upgrading of rural road networks.

Mahesh Kumar Bartaula praised the Nepali women’s football team for rising 13 places to 87th in FIFA’s latest rankings, noting that athletes could achieve even more if the government provided better support for sports development.

Mahesh Basnet pointed out that floods and landslides during the monsoon often destroy bridges and suggested using bailey bridges as a quick solution to restore transport links. He also stressed the need to train engineers capable of constructing such bridges.

Madhav Sapkota called for the immediate reopening of the Tatopani and Kerung border checkpoints, warning that delays could lead to price increases during the upcoming festive season.
