Minister for Drinking Water Pradip Yadav held talks with a visiting Indian delegation on finding long-term solutions to the drinking water crisis in Nepal’s Tarai region. The Indian team recently visited drought-affected districts in Madhes Province to assess the situation and briefed the minister on the challenges and ongoing efforts. Minister Yadav said the government would act on the team’s recommendations and expressed hope for a concrete agreement during Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s upcoming visit to India.
KATHMANDU, AUGUST 15 – Minister for Drinking Water Pradip Yadav met with a visiting Indian delegation on Friday to discuss long-term solutions for the drinking water crisis in Nepal’s Tarai region. The Indian team had recently visited Madhes Province to inspect drought-affected areas and assess the severity of the problem.
According to Ministry spokesperson Mina Shrestha, the delegation briefed Minister Yadav on the current situation, the challenges faced, and ongoing efforts to tackle both immediate and long-term water shortages. The team visited several districts from August 12 before returning to Kathmandu. A detailed action plan will be prepared once their inspection report is finalized.
Minister Yadav said the discussions were thorough and that the government would act based on the delegation’s recommendations. He also highlighted the MoU signed a few months ago with India’s Ministry of Jal Shakti and expressed confidence that the cooperation would strengthen Nepal–India relations. He thanked the Indian government for its support and hoped for a concrete agreement on a long-term solution during Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s upcoming visit to India.
From Nepal, senior officials including Secretary Pramila Devi Shakya Bajracharya, Joint Secretary Engineer Shrestha, Engineer Kamal Raj Shrestha, and Deputy Director General Narayan Prasad Acharya were present. The Indian delegation included Regional Director Prashant Rai, Jagadamda Prasad from Lucknow, Sanitation Advisor Ashish Pande, and other experts.
